When should ammonium sulfate not be used?

Ammonium sulfate is an excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly known as fertilizer powder), suitable for general soil and crops, can make branches and leaves grow vigorously, improve fruit quality and yield, and enhance crop resistance to disasters. It can be used as base fertilizer, topdressing fertilizer and seed fertilizer. Below, I will introduce the five major points for attention in the application of ammonium sulfate.

1. Try not to apply ammonium sulfate in paddy fields.

Because under flooding conditions, the soil will be severely hypoxic, and the sulfate ions in it will be reduced to sulfide after ammonium sulfate is applied. Excessive accumulation of sulfide concentration can cause plant root damage and death.

2. Ammonium sulfate is an acidic fertilizer. Long-term application can increase the acidity of the soil, so ammonium sulfate is not suitable for application on acidic soil.

When applying on acidic soil in the south, attention should be paid to the application of plant ash or phosphate rock powder, calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, etc. When applied on calcareous soil in the north, in order to prevent calcium ions in the soil from combining with sulfate radicals to form insoluble calcium sulfate, which will cause soil compaction, attention should be paid to the application of organic fertilizers.

3. Ammonium sulfate can be used as base fertilizer, seed fertilizer and top dressing.

When used as basal fertilizer, cover soil should be applied deeply to facilitate crop absorption. When used as seed fertilizer, the amount of application should not be too large, and the control should not exceed 3 kg per mu. Topdressing is the most suitable application method, and the amount of ammonium sulfate topdressing should be determined according to different soil types. For soil with poor water and fertilizer retention performance, it should be topdressed in stages, and the dosage should not be too much each time; for soil with good water and fertilizer retention performance, the dosage can be appropriately more each time. The amount of soil moisture also has a great impact on fertilizer efficiency, especially in dry land, when applying ammonium sulfate, it is necessary to pay attention to watering in time. When topdressing in paddy fields, it should be drained and dried first, and it should be applied in combination with plowing and harrowing at the same time.

4. It is not suitable to apply ammonium sulfate on the same cultivated land for a long time

It is not advisable to apply ammonium sulfate on the same cultivated land for a long time, otherwise the soil will become acidic and cause compaction. If it is really necessary to apply, some lime or organic fertilizer can be applied in an appropriate amount. However, it must be noted that ammonium sulfate and lime cannot be mixed to prevent ammonium sulfate from decomposing and causing nitrogen loss. Generally, the combined application of the two should be separated by 3 to 5 days.

5. Do not contact or mix ammonium sulfate with other alkaline fertilizers or substances

Ammonium sulfate fertilizer cannot be contacted or mixed with other alkaline fertilizers or alkaline substances to prevent the reduction of fertilizer efficiency.
